So…
One of the character traits that I really… really… struggle to ‘forgive’ in other people… is arrogance.
And – if you know me – you’ll already know that one of my main core values is my love of human diversity. I like that people are different. And I’m interested in the company and the perspectives of pretty-much anyone.
BUT…
…when it comes to arrogant people…
Holy macaroon.
I really struggle to maintain my usual accept-them-just-as-they-are stance. Or my Love-and-Let-Live stance.
Arrogant people get up my nose like a sticky, difficult-to-extract booger. You just wanna blow it out and be done. But no. They cling like tar to every nostril hair. They want to irritate and offend.
I have a visceral, primal… everything-in-me-wants-to-vomit… response to arrogant people. And if you want to know what I mean by “arrogant people” – it’s people who say, think or promote these kinds of things:
- “I am 100% right and everyone else is 100% wrong”
- “We are The Good Guys… and the rest of you – who don’t think / speak / look / believe / behave like us… are The Bad Guys”
- “I’m a Leader and a Winner. And the rest of you who don’t see things my way are all losers!”
- “I’m strong and powerful and to be admired and respected… because I am strong and powerful”
- “I am BETTER than you… WORTHIER than you… more IMPORTANT than you… more significant than you and I matter more than you… because of my money / power / status / race / title / religion / nationality / social class / sex / colour / size / culture…etc, etc…”
Suffice to say… I really reallllllly don’t like people those kinds of people.
I find their behaviour and talk so noxious – that sometimes, I feel it physically. My skin crawls, my stomach lurches like it wants to vomit… and I find it really hard to wipe the “Ewww!” expression off my face.
But – here’s the thing.
Because I’m such an All-or-Nothing person… I really, really struggle to define the line between arrogance… and confidence.
Because confidence and a healthy dose of self-belief and self-love is NOT a vile, poisonous human trait. If anything, it’s a really important ingredient if one wants to do all kinds of awesome things with one’s short, precious life.
And – although my head knows this… and understands this to be true…
…There is something in me that is so utterly revolted at – even the IDEA – of wandering in to the territory of the arrogant… that I seem to have thrown the proverbial baby out with the bathwater somewhere along the way…
It’s like I have this weird left-or-right pendulum inside my brain. On the right is this arrogant, self-absorbed, puffed-up, narcissistic despot… boasting and pontificating and threatening to destroy all who dare to disagree. On the left of the pendulum… is the spineless Shadow-Worm. The lowly creature… hiding quietly in the dark. Hanging her head in shame. Speaking in a whisper. Hoping not to be noticed. Believing herself to be worthless with nothing of value to offer the world.
I have lived a regrettable portion of my adult existence – especially during the Diminishment Years – as Shadow-Worm.
And… I have (for the most part) left the strange comforts of that dark, miserable little hole – and rediscovered myself (and my HAT’ness) along the way.
And – I am NOT the Lowly-Shadow-Worm any more…
BUT…
At the same time… I’m also not “confident”.
I’m not even sure what that word means – or what it is… or how to obtain it.
I like the idea of being confident... because confident people usually get what they’re after! If Richard Branson – for example – could bottle his confidence and self-belief… I’d be first in line for a dose of it. He (and many-many others) just somehow, magically manage to believe in the validity of their own ideas!!
How do they do that?
Why can’t I do that?
They manage to accomplish all kinds of incredible things in their lives and careers. Confident people can SELL themselves (and their ideas). They’re not embarrassed of their calling… their ideas… their dreams… their products. They’re not afraid to ask for stuff. They can walk into meetings with head held high. They can approach investors and collaborators and potential partners – and say: “I have a great idea that I think you’d be interested in. Can we talk?”
I… on the other hand… want to crawl in to a small, damp, dark hole even THINKING about the idea of (cringe! cringe!)... promoting myself… my book… my ideas… my big dreams… or – for that matter – anything to do with… ME.
My head screeches: “It’s arrogant! It’s arrogant! It’s vain! It’s vain! It’s vain!!”
And the insidious (and now achingly familiar) voice (representing a collective group of people and memories from my past) repeats accusingly:
“Who do YOU think YOU are? You think you’re so special? You think you’re so talented? You think you’re so important? You think you’re better than everyone else? Well – you’re NOT! Get BACK in your place! Get BACK to the shadows where you belong!!!”
And – so that’s what I do. Hide away.
And trust me — I am sooooo good at hiding.
But – simultaneously… TIRED of hiding.
Tired, tired, bone-tired.
And so… I’ve taken a few big (scary) steps in an attempt to free myself from the constraints of my own limiting, shoot-myself-in-the-foot mindset.
- I have sold my first painting. For… actual… money. I don’t exaggerate when I say that I so badly just wanted to GIVE the artwork away – in order to avoid the excruciating, inevitable money-discussion. In fact – my mouth opened… about to say: “Listen, just take the art. You can have it. Seriously – it’s a gift”. And it took every inch of willpower to shut that mouth of mine – and gratefully accept her financial offer without collapsing to the floor in convulsions of awkwardness…
- Somebody else has asked me to “name the price” on something I created for her. And – again, although it’s utterly excruciating… I shall somehow manage to do this. Deadline: tomorrow.
- And… (this is a biggie)… I have entered an international art competition. Something that the Shadow-Worm would NEVER, EVER have contemplated doing… (since – as SW likes to remind me… I’m not a “REAL” Artist). But – I did it anyway. Entered an international art competition – in spite of the inner voices screeching: “Vain! Vain! Arrogant! Arrogant! You think you’re special and talented! You think you’re so wonderful! But you’re NOT! You’re NOT!!!!”
So… baby steps.
Baby steps in figuring out the difference between arrogance and confidence. Reminding myself (daily) – that diminishing and HIDING… as comfortable as it is for me… as easy as it is for me… does not serve the world. My shadowy hole and a cage are the same thing. There’s a great quote that says:
Birds born in a cage think that flying is an illness.
I wasn’t born in a cage – but I climbed in there when I was really young… and I made it my home. So it’s a comfortable place for me. In spite of it’s restrictions and limitations. And although I’ve been fully aware – for some time now – that the cage door is open… that I’m free to now spread my wings and fly and BE who I was always meant to be… and DO what I was meant to do…
I’m still hesitating on the precipice. Asking myself: “Is this possible? Can I really do this? Am I deluding myself? Do I think I’m better than all the other caged birds? What RIGHT do I have to fly? Is it arrogant and selfish?”….
Maybe this particular process (slow and laborious as it has been)… is nothing more than the gradual realisation that…. I’m not a Shadow-Worm… and never was. That I’ve always been a wild, colourful Hat-Bird… and I have actual working-wings. And I CAN fly…
I just need to take a deep, brave breath… and jump.
OMG OMG OMG you sold one of your pieces Yay!!! Yay!!!!! Yay!!!! I’m unbelieveably excited for you …….Yay!!! and a competition Yay! Yay ! Yay! (the y on my keyboard has faded lol!!) Fabulous, fabbulous, Well done YOu xxx Jumping up and down with excitement and sending big hugs <3
I know, I know! Cool – huh? Less than 2 months after making my first (large) paintings… I have sold one. It kinda feels a bit surreal. All the stuff I never believed to be true (about myself – and what I can and can’t do)… all those RIDICULOUS limitations that I had placed upon myself for so many years…. ***sigh****…. I keep thinking of the quote: “It’s not who you ARE that holds you back… it’s who you THINK you’re not”. So-true—– so true… SO true…. Thanks, lovely Rach – (as always)… for sharing these moments with me…. XX
Wow Heather, I really felt as if you were describing me and my life. I just seem to attract the arrogant people in my life cause I am that silly Shadow Worm and they seem to find me somehow. Was married to the arrogant narcissist for many, many MANY years before it hit me…….This is arrogance and narcissism at its best…..took me 42 years to divorce him!!!!! That’s how good I am at being the shadow worm. Yuk, when I think of how much of my life was wasted but somehow those “arrogants” still find me. I have a female friend….half my age……who KNOWS IT ALL and I cringe just being in her company . and you guessed it….I retreat into my nothingness EVERY TIME!!!!!
Well you have given me confidence and inspiration……maybe, just maybe, one day I’ll be able to share the poems I write with someone in the publishing industry and who knows……
I’m soooo proud of you and the giant steps you have taken…..well done!!! And please please keep writing. I so look forward to hearing from you,
Virginia… firstly – THANK-YOU for sharing a bit of your story… with such frankness and openness. Of course… I sooooooooo understand what you’re saying. I hear you, I hear you, I HEAR you. I know what it feels like to live in the world of the Shadow-Worm… to diminish and shrink into nothingness – in order to please others… in order to keep-the-peace… avoid conflict… or just because we feel we really don’t have much of value to add. I’m soooo glad – though – that you (and I… and many more of us)… are having our eyes opened to a bigger picture. Firstly – that we’re NOT worms! Secondly – that we are ALL valuable… and have gifts, talents strengths, passions – or SOMETHING of value to offer the world. Thirdly – that just because some people shout louder than others… it doesn’t make them *more*. So – I think you’re on a positive journey towards embracing your unique YOU’ness (including your talents, strengths, poetry, etc). I hope you find the strength to stand your ground in the face of forceful people who try to push you aside (I’m still learning on how to do this in a constructive – rather than destructive way… again… baby steps). Share your poetry, your thoughts, your ideas, your writing with the world… show YOURSELF that you can – and will. And that you won’t be squished into that worm-shaped mould again!!! XX H XX
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for replying. I think I’ll try a new mantra “I can, I will, I am, I do” Grateful thanks…you “Rock” to quote my 13 year old granddaughter!
Such a pleasure, Virginia! PS: (I also like to tell people that they rock)… 🙂
I agree, about arrogant people. Mostly, I try to evade them – but I have someone in my family that fits that description. Many times in the middle of a ‘conversation’ (a monologue where the person tell me how wrong I am in all aspects), I will think by myself: And I don’t really like you at all! One has to be careful to smile only inwardly!
Wow – it is wonderful that you have entered the competition – good for you for overruling SW.
I am still very far away from that point – I enjoy writing, but think of it as ‘fluff’. And then my hubby asked me why I don’t try and publish my fluff – look what the author of Twilight managed to do with her fluff … It made me contemplate long and hard about why I keep on thinking that my ideas are not worthy.
Anita… firstly – thanks for writing. Your comment about the “fluff” that you write gives me SUCH food for thought. Mostly because – I wonder WHY so many of us think this way about our ideas – and especially CREATIVE ideas. WHO taught us… who told us… that our writing / poetry / art / creations… are “silly”… “meaningless”… “fluff”… “superfluous”…
Was it school? Family, friends, the communities that raised us? The society or culture that raised us??
As you say… I think we all need to contemplate LONG and HARD on WHY we keep thinking that our ideas, our art, our creations are not worthy… and specifically – why we still think of them as “fluff”… PS: Glad your husband is on board and encouraging you!! I also have a very supportive and encouraging hubby and it makes SUCH a difference!!! x
