Remember that nursery rhyme:  “sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me”…?  Well, I’m of the belief that words are far more powerful than we give them credit for… and especially when those words are negative or critical – and especially when they come from the mouth of somebody you love, trust or respect.

I wrote a song a fews ago called “Speak Love”… and it’s based on the idea that if criticism and harsh words can bring us down – then encouragement and affirmation can strengthen us and put us in a happy mood!  Based on this idea, I’ve been putting together a few illustrations that I hope will encourage and inspire others… even complete strangers…

And – here’s a quick story:  Today, I figured out that this idea works!  I was enjoying a very yummy cappuccino and slice of carrot cake at Vovo Telo in Parkhurst (I love it when baristas go to the effort of making little hearts and pictures in the milk foam).  I was there for only about 40 minutes, but what I was drawing drew a strong reaction from passers-by who couldn’t resist taking a peek over my shoulder.

One of my favourite responses came from a young guy with super-long dreadlocks – who said:  “I love what you’re drawing… and that’s a really great message!” – with that, he gave me the most beautiful smile… and a little courtesy bow.  His affirmation and encouragement had me grinning quietly to myself for the rest of the morning.  🙂
