Since we’re in Durban again… and since I don’t have all my paints and art-stuff with me (because they’re bulky and not exactly conducive to travel)… I’ve been experimenting with drawing apps on my iPad.

I have an old’ish iPad with a cracked screen.  And I have a finger.  And I have an app called Procreate.  And I’ve been having lots of fun with these 3 things!

Here’s how it works:

  1.  The first step is to take a nice photo (thankfully the iPad has a camera)… or to find a photo already stored on the iPad.
  2.  Then, I crop it and desaturate it (using the other-app-I-like:  Snapseed!)
  3. Then – using my index finger (because I’m still saving up for the beloved Apple Pencil)… I draw on top of the photo.
  4. Once I’m happy with the result – I share it (usually on Instagram).

Here’s a visual journey through the process:

Here's the horse head framed nicely in a square... and desaturated.

I also decided to experiment with people… and, who better than my own offspring?

So – I took a quick snap of Morgan with the iPad:

I decided I wanted to keep her face and her skin exactly as-is… but thought I’d have fun with the rest (and make her hair pink too!)…

Fun, huh…?

I think I’m coming to realise that although I enjoy taking photos… I really enjoy taking photos AND drawing on top of them!

To end this post… here’s a digital self-portrait (and yes, my hair actually is silver/black/blue now…)
